I. Complete Story Walkthrough & Act Guide

a. Overview & Getting Started

BioWare’s Core RPG DNA
You know the drill: deep storytelling, strong moral choices, and responsive characters. DA2 speeds things up with Hawke’s journey spread across three Acts, punctuated by years passing in between.

Character Creation
Pick your class—Warrior, Mage, or Rogue. Each brings its own strengths: Warriors tank, Mages crowd-control, Rogues slash or snipe. Customize Hawke to suit your style.

Save Imports
Having a Dragon Age Origins save can shift bonus dialogue and world states. It’s worth it if you’re all in for lore continuity.

Act Structure & Flow

  • Act 1: Arrival & settlement in Kirkwall

  • Act 2: Power struggles and conflict fuel the city’s tension

  • Act 3: The final, brutal confrontation and consequences

Starting Tips
Stick with quests that get you gear and companions early. Act 1’s Deep Roads expedition unlocks your clan's future.

b. Act-by-Act Breakdown

Act 1: Refugee to Kirkwall Citizen
You escape Lothering in the Prologue, arriving in a city with political intrigue and moral complexity. Quests like Act of Mercy and Enemies Among Us set the tone.
Prioritize companion quests and hunt down lowtown codices for early achievements.

Act 2: Tensions Rise
Kirkwall is a city under pressure. Qunari conflicts, templar-mage politics, and faction power grabs define the act. Timing companion quests and political decisions here determines your path forward.

Act 3: Collapse and Resolution
The fate of Kirkwall hangs in the balance. Choices ripple outward—will you side with mages, templars, or embrace blood magic's darker roots? These decisions shape your final ending.

Strategy Tip
Follow a community-backed quest order for efficiency:
Frontload acts by clearing the Deep Roads, diplomatic missions, and side-quests like Mark of the Assassin in Act 2.

II. Character Builds & Combat Mastery

a. Hawke Builds

Mage Builds
Highly favored by many. Go Creation tree for healing and Haste, or mix in Spirit for Crowd Control. Adds utility and solo resilience.

Warrior Builds
Tank-focused densifiers using Guardian or Berserker classes. Pair with heavy armor and shield for survivability.

Rogue Builds
Stealth assassins (dual wield) or ranged snipers. Let Varric handle crossbow solo—give him Dexterity, keep Isabela for chests.

Tips for Companions

  • Varric: Ranged DPS, dexterity-based

  • Merrill & Anders: Lean mage stats

  • Adjust builds around your core team for synergy.

b. Combat Tactics

Master the real-time-with-pause system. Set up formations—frontline tanks, ranged DPS in back, rogues for flanking. Combo spells and prepare for major fights like the Ancient Rock Wraith.

In Nightmare mode, crowd control and positioning become essential. Freeze, stun, stagger—use everything strategically.

III. Companions & Relationships

a. Companion Profiles

  • Varric – Narrator and witty rogue with a beloved crossbow.

  • Aveline – Honor-bound tank, can't romance.

  • Anders – Mage who pushes mage rights—personal quest unlockable.

  • Isabela – Pirate rogue, romance option, stylish and chaotic.

  • Fenris, Merrill, Sebastian, Tallis—each adds unique story and skillsets.

b. Romance Paths

Girlfriend Hawke? Anders or Isabela, depending on your playstyle. Male Hawke? Options slimmer. Approval is built through dialogue choices and gift-giving.

Approach romances with care—some lead to heartbreak or dramatic fallout.

IV. Quest Guidance & Content Completion

a. Main Quest Flow

Stick to essential quests:

  • Prologue: Escape LotheringDeep Roads Expedition → political arcs → the final battle.

Choose wisely: your decisions define Kirkwall’s future.

b. Side Quests & Hunts

Don't skip:

  • Companion storylines

  • Apostate hunts for Drake shop gold

  • Codices and hidden messages (achievements await)

These deepen your play and expand Hawke’s lore.

V. Equipment & Crafting

Seek out enchanted gear and legendary items in special locations or shops. Prioritize armor with bonuses fitting your chosen build. Use crafting stations to improve and customize armaments.

Upgrade gear consistently to maintain peak performance, especially against overworld bosses.

VI. Location & Exploration

Navigate Kirkwall’s sprawling districts:

  • Lowtown: gritty streets, sketchy quests

  • Hightown: political elites and intrigue

  • Darktown: criminal backdoors

  • Docks/Blooming Rose: trader hotspots and info hubs

Explore fully—and don’t forget merchants like Sandal and Bodahn offering crafting services.

VII. Technical Tips & Platforms

Performance

PC offers best visuals and mod support. Consoles run well with simplified controls.

Manage your save files and load often—DA2 is easy to soft-lock with decisions.

Versions & DLC

Play DLC like Mark of the Assassin or Legacy in Act 2–3 for expanded content and deeper character development.

That’s your Kirkwall roadmap. Dragon Age 2 isn't just a game—it’s a saga shaped by your choices, companions, and heart.
